    Summer Reading List

    Freshman Communities

    The Wilson High School 9th-Grade Community is required for all 9th-grade students and consists of the following components: English 1–2, Modern World History 1–2, Physics: NGSS, College & Career Exploration and Health 1. The 9th-Grade Community is a small learning community designed to assist
    students in their transition from middle school to high school. Teacher teams, which include 9th-Grade Community teachers and a special education teacher, meet regularly to discuss individual student needs and plan for student success.

    Link Crew

    Link Crew connects all 9th-grade students with an upper class student mentor to assure a smooth transition to high school. Link Crew helps freshmen feel comfortable in their new high school, setting them up for a successful 9th-grade year. The transition to high school is big step, and we are committed to making it successful for every student at Wilson.

    Freshman Year 101

    Held in late August in the Wilson Auditorium

    Parents, attend an informational session to help you better understand and engage with the programs, staff and services that are available for you and your freshman. The 9th-grade year is an important transition both socially and academically. We want to make sure we are working together to ensure the best possible success for each student. Held in the evening at the beginning of the school year.

     

    College Information Night: Planning for College for Parents and Students Grades 9-12

     

    Held in the spring of each year, College Information Night is full of invaluable resources for all grade levels, including sessions on choosing a college, the application process, financial aid and scholarships, and more. Parents and students in all grades should plan to attend. College planning starts in Freshman year with curriculum planning and participation in extracurricular activities such as clubs or sports.

    Now that you're in 9th grade, it's time to get serious about your post-secondary plans. By starting early, you'll be better prepared.

    • Don't neglect your study habits! Keep up the good work, and continue to improve your study skills.
    • Talk to your guidance counselors, teachers, family members or trusted adults about your plans for college. If you're not sure if college is the best option for you, talk to your counselor. Dive into Naviance!
    • Find out about college entrance requirements for the schools you're interested in. Naviance can help you with this! Volunteers in the College center are ready to help you.
    • Create a file of the following documents and notes: report cards, lists of awards and honors, school and community activities, and volunteer work. Start filling out your resume on Naviance.
    • Start thinking about the colleges you want to attend…Enter in Naviance.
    • Find out about AP and other honors-level courses through Wilson’s forecasting guide.
    • Continue to get involved in campus and community activities.
    • Practice self-advocacy and create healthy relationships with teachers
    • How are you spending your summer? Volunteering and educational programs can help give you a better idea about what kind of training or career would be right for you. Work with Kate Morgan in the career center to set up an internship or job shadow.
    • College life can be a big change — you're on your own! Try taking some small steps towards independence this year, perhaps with more responsibility around your house.
