Community News

  • Hello all! Happy rainy Thursday. We are definitely at the full on SPRING phase where the weather each day is totally different!

Please be sure to keep sending jackets, as we do like to get outside if the rain isn't too hard (although today we had indoor recess). Please also send extra pants and shoes for these wet days.

Tomorrow is Spirit day and Spinning Wheel day!

Great news....both Evan Williams and Laura Breaux are back to being staffed at .5 for next year (they had both been cut to .4) This is really wonderful news!!

    Peace, Sabrina

    April Art Spotlight

Hello Vestal Community! April has been all about weaving, with some clay and other projects in the mix.

Kindergarten and 1st grade have been working on circle weaving, while 2nd-4th grade have been learning to weave on cardboard looms (a special shout out to Kindergarten parent Eric Porter for donating some high-quality cardboard remnants from his workplace, from which I made around 90 sturdy looms!). 5th grade participated in a district-wide collaborative art project that is currently on display at the 国产真实迷奸 Art Museum (see note below about the exhibit, which closes this Sunday), and have finished glazing their beautiful clay houses, most of which are in the kiln as I write this!

I would also like to thank Kindergarten parent Layne Wyse for sharing his clay expertise and his time by coming to Vestal in March to teach two lessons on creating clay texture stamps, which students used to add interesting textures to tiles and medallions. Ms. Emily’s class had so much fun collecting interesting textures around the art room, and now we have these stamps to use in all art classes! Look for these works to be displayed in the building and/or to come home with your student.

I’d like to encourage everyone to visit the 国产真实迷奸 Art Museum this Sunday, if you’d like to view the annual district-wide student art showcase: admission is FREE; see details below. I was there on opening night, and was blown away by the incredible student art. Lastly, I am proud to share that 5th grader Anna Nguyen’s artwork was selected by me as Vestal’s entry this year. Congratulations, Anna!

    Sunday, April 28:

Welcome to the HeART of 国产真实迷奸: A 国产真实迷奸 Public Schools Arts Showcase + Miller Family Free Day! Enjoy free admission all day 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in celebration of youth arts and the long-standing community partnership between the Museum and 国产真实迷奸 Public Schools. Make art, see student performances, and visit the HeART of 国产真实迷奸 Visual Art Exhibition in the Mark Building. In the main Museum, visit  and , the exhibition that inspired the HeART of 国产真实迷奸 collaborative art projects.

    Happy Spring!

    Ms. Breaux

  • West Sylvan Eighth Grader Wields a Mighty Pen

Even as a small child, Miranda Yesser possessed a keen understanding of the mercenary nature of the publishing industry.

According to her one-page, tongue-in-cheek author bio, which hangs on a clothesline in English teacher Dr. Holly Graham’s colorful classroom, “Yesser began writing books at a young age, then trying to sell them to her family for 5 dollars a copy.”

It might be time to scoop those copies up. Miranda recently received honorable mention in the annual for her short story, “.”

  • The Arts Tax in Action: The HeART of 国产真实迷奸 is Still Beating

Students who took their first steps into PPS kindergarten classrooms in 2014 – the year 国产真实迷奸’s first-ever arts education tax went into effect – are now thriving sophomores.

Evan Sampson is one of those sophomores, and he will have a chance to share his story at this year’s HeART of 国产真实迷奸, a showcase spotlighting the artistic accomplishments of some PPS’s most talented students.

The two-week celebration of creativity will take place from April 16-28 at the 国产真实迷奸 Art Museum. All exhibits and performances are free and open to the public.

  • Lincoln & Grant Constitution Teams to Compete Nationally

This weekend, the Lincoln and Grant high school constitution teams will compete in the annual We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals in Washington, D.C.

Now in its fifth decade, the event brings together students from all 50 states for a series of mock congressional hearings on everything from the Constitutional Convention of 1787 to the separation of powers and the future of democracy.

The Lincoln and Grant constitution teams, under the instruction of Patrick Magee-Jenks and Angela DiPasquale respectively, have long histories of taking home trophies on both the state and national level.

    Good luck to all!
