    Hi Riders,

Congratulations to our Jazz Band!  They won first place at the Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival this weekend.  Also, congratulations to our Japanese students for their participation in the Japanese Speech Contest.  One of our students got second place!  Also, congratulations to our girls’ 4x400 relay team.  They beat the school record last week!

Saturday School is this Saturday.  Please have your student sign up if they want to come and get some work done on Saturday morning.  The link to the sign up is below.

    Principal’s Message

    Hi Riders,

It’s hard to believe we are starting the last quarter of the school year!  Look for report cards in your mailbox at the end of this week.  If you have a senior, check their grades and reach out now to make plans with teachers so your student finishes strong!  Graduation is June 2nd at 4:00pm at Providence Park.  Senior’s last day is May 31st, so there isn’t a lot of time to finish up late work if seniors are not finishing the year strong.

As we move into spring, Roosevelt is busy.  Spring sports, concerts, and end of the year celebrations are all happening in April and May.  Check Trivory and this newsletter for more information.

    Principal’s Message

    Hi Riders,

Happy April!  It’s hard to believe that we are moving into the last quarter of the school year.  There is no school on Friday for teachers to grade and plan for fourth quarter.  There is school next Monday (that’s a change from the calendar at the beginning of the year).  Please reach out if you or your student has questions about grades or assignments.

    Principal’s Message

    Hi Riders,

What a weekend!  Our boys’ basketball team placed 2nd in state during the state tournament.  Our band was amazing at each game and our cheer team was so positive and such great leaders for our student section!  Our Oregon Battle of the Books team placed 5th, and our dance team competed in a competition as they get ready for state competitions next weekend.

Our community showed up in force on Saturday at the Chiles Center to cheer on our Riders.  It was amazing to see all of the love and support for our team and our school from the larger St. Johns and 国产真实迷奸 community!  Shout out to the Peninsula Optimist Club for their generous donation to purchase student tickets for each of the playoff games!  We will celebrate with the team, our band, the cheer squad, and our fans at a very brief assembly this afternoon at the end of the day.

It’s a great day to be a Rider!

    Principal’s Message

    Hi Riders,

Happy March!  This weekend is our first Saturday school this term.  The link to sign up is below.

The weather should be getting better soon, so it’s important to talk to your student about being a good community member during lunch.  Fred Meyer continues to ask students to not bring their backpack in to the store at lunch.  Some students are leaving their backpacks at the front door of Fred Meyer and a few of those bags have been stolen.  Remind your student to leave their bag in their locker at lunch time.  We don’t want anyone getting their bag and/or chromebook stolen.

We have changed the student check-out process at the office.  If a student is leaving campus, we are asking that they sign out and get parent approval before they leave.  We want your student in class, so please remind them to stay in school or have you communicate with the attendance office if they have an appointment.

    Go Riders!

    Hi Riders,

What a great week to be a Rider!  If you haven’t seen The Addams’ Family musical yet, get your tickets for next weekend!  It is another amazing performance!  Our boys’ basketball team won the PIL championship last weekend and are ranked 3rd in state.  Come out on Tuesday at 7:00pm to see our Riders take on David Douglas at the Velt.

This week is also the middle of 3rd quarter, so progress reports are due later this week.  Check your mailbox next week to see your student’s progress in the quarter.  We will have Saturday School on March 9th.  Look for a separate email to sign up your student.

    Principal’s Message

    Hi Riders,

I shared a few hours ago that our building had some vandalism and graffiti when we got here this morning.  I want to say thank you to our custodial staff for responding so quickly and helping to get the building ready for students.  Thank you to the teachers and other staff who helped to cover the graffiti so that students wouldn’t see it as they entered the building and went to classes.  I am always so grateful to our community and how we come together in moments like this.

This is the last week of winter sports.  Shout out to swimming and wrestling who both had students qualify for state!  Our boys’ basketball team will be heading to state this year as well and will likely be the PIL champs!

Huge shout out to Jo Lane and our theatre program.  They were selected to be the first high school in Oregon to perform “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” which is now being performed off Broadway.  I know our students will create an amazing production!  Our Constitution Team is continuing to grow and had another great showing at the Con Team competition a few weeks ago.  Finally - congratulations to our Jazz Band for their multiple qualifiers for state!

Report cards are on their way to your house.  If you don’t get your report card by the end of the week, let us know.

Remember - we have school next Monday to make up time for the teachers' strike and the snowstorm.  We want your students here on time every day.

Shout out to our Jazz Band that qualified for the state and to our Theatre troupe who won several awards in the Northwest Regional Acting Competition!

    Principal’s Message

    Hi Riders,

Today is Hoodies Up Day at Roosevelt.  We honor the memory of Trayvon Martin - a 17-year-old black boy that was shot and killed in Florida while walking through a neighborhood.  The acquittal of George Zimmerman led Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi to begin the Black Lives Matter movement.  Today is Trayvon’s birthday, and it is also the first day of our Black Lives Matter week of action for the start of Black History Month.  This week, teachers wil be teaching about different aspects of the Black Lives Matter movement and Black History that are connected to their content.  Shout out to Mr. David Massey - a ninth grade seminar teacher - for his lesson teaching students the history of the Civil Rights movement and the Black Live Matters movement and the connections to 国产真实迷奸 history.  Thanks to our Black Student Union and Leadership students for their work on this event and others to celebrate Black History Month.

    Hi Riders,

We are starting semester two today.  Please remind your student the importance of starting the new semester strong.  Attending class everyday, completing assignments on time, and attending flex are all ways to ensure your student is passing at the end of the semester.  There are a lot of events coming up on campus.  Check out the calendar in Trivory for dates and times of our games, plays, and performances.

    Hi Riders,

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had time to connect with family and friends over the shortened winter break.  There are three weeks until finals.  We want your students in class  everyday until the end of the semester.  Talk to your student about finishing the semester strong!  If your student needs help, there is flex each week.  Teachers and counselors are available to help.  Have your student reach out if they need anything.

Parent Teacher conferences are January 10th and 11th.  All conferences are in person here at Roosevelt.  If your student is failing any classes, this is a great time to connect with teachers and find out how to help your student finish strong!

  • West Sylvan Eighth Grader Wields a Mighty Pen

Even as a small child, Miranda Yesser possessed a keen understanding of the mercenary nature of the publishing industry.

According to her one-page, tongue-in-cheek author bio, which hangs on a clothesline in English teacher Dr. Holly Graham’s colorful classroom, “Yesser began writing books at a young age, then trying to sell them to her family for 5 dollars a copy.”

It might be time to scoop those copies up. Miranda recently received honorable mention in the annual for her short story, “.”

  • Lincoln & Grant Constitution Teams to Compete Nationally

This weekend, the Lincoln and Grant high school constitution teams will compete in the annual We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals in Washington, D.C.

Now in its fifth decade, the event brings together students from all 50 states for a series of mock congressional hearings on everything from the Constitutional Convention of 1787 to the separation of powers and the future of democracy.

The Lincoln and Grant constitution teams, under the instruction of Patrick Magee-Jenks and Angela DiPasquale respectively, have long histories of taking home trophies on both the state and national level.

    Good luck to all!
