    Reminder:

The office is seeing an influx of forgotten items (backpack, coats, water bottles, homework, library books etc.). We are asking that unless it's an emergency*, please leave forgotten items at home.

It's a great way to help children learn (in a safe, low risk way) and we notice that they rise to the responsibility of being in charge of their school items.

*Emergency scenarios would be forgotten medications, allergen friendly lunches, etc.

Weekly Principal Message

  • Dear Rieke Rocket community,

Thank you to all the volunteers and students and staff who came out on Wednesday for an Earth Day campus clean-up. A special thank you to Julie Smith and Malinda Mueller for organizing the event! The campus looks so much better, especially knowing that it was our community coming together to make Rieke a bit more beautiful for spring. I wish I had taken some pictures for our newest Rieke Video News episode, but there are many fun stories and images from the week to entertain. Check it out on our YouTube channel In addition you can always see fun daily snapshots into the Rieke Way on our Instagram feed   All of these forms of media and so much more useful information is always available on our website .

Speaking of the Rieke Way we are having an all school next Tuesday morning at 8:55 to celebrate students who show leadership in being responsible. All are welcome but some parents will get special invitations from their child’s teachers. In addition, we having a school wide reward that day Tuesday 4/30. Wear your Rieke Rocket or Markham Eagle spirit wear to school, and thank you to the PTA for bringing popsicles for all students on Tuesday. Our theme for May will be creativity.

    From the Rieke Foundation:

Our annual auction on Saturday was a huge hit! We raised almost $85,000 for Rieke and are humbled at the generosity of this community. THANK YOU to all who attended the event and bid online from home. We still have room at some of our signup parties, so purchase now and show your support:

Science Fair: Thu, May 2, 6-8:00 pm

Please invite your family, friends, and neighbors to this wonderful community event.  You can even skip making dinner because pizza and snacks will be available for suggested donation, thanks to our amazing PTA.  Student projects will be on display.  We will have The Oregon Reptile Man putting on shows.  There will be fun science demos going on in collaboration with Mrs C and IBW Robotics Club and IBW Makerspace Club.  Come out to support science!  Be sure to submit project entries by Sunday, April 28th, but of course, we will always accept those late, Eurkea! projects even the day of the Fair.  Be sure to visit our webpage for all of the details.

The Art Fair and Student Art Extravaganza is back! It will be on Sunday, May 19 from 9:30-2 pm. Ms. Jill is in need of volunteers to help hang the show, take down the show, and monitor the halls during the event. It is extremely helpful if we have at least one parent from every class for set up and take down. We will hang art before, during, and after school starting May 1 and continue hanging until show time. The art will need to come down and be sorted the week of May 28. If you can help with a little or a lot, email Ms. Jill at jmitchell@pps.net

    Technology news!

Good news we are one of 10 schools in the finals for a $2000 reward! Four schools will receive $2000, one school gets $5000.

Our prize will go toward  Makedo kits that are hands on and kid friendly tools to create and build with cardboard. My goal is to use it for a fun structure during STEM Night. But the tools will be available for classroom use also.

Please vote... and you can vote every day for the WEEK!

Thank you to all our amazing volunteers and community members who continue to support our pursuit of making Rieke a model of excellence in Instruction, Communication, and Community. Together we continue to make a positive difference for our collective children. Cheers!

  • West Sylvan Eighth Grader Wields a Mighty Pen

Even as a small child, Miranda Yesser possessed a keen understanding of the mercenary nature of the publishing industry.

According to her one-page, tongue-in-cheek author bio, which hangs on a clothesline in English teacher Dr. Holly Graham’s colorful classroom, “Yesser began writing books at a young age, then trying to sell them to her family for 5 dollars a copy.”

It might be time to scoop those copies up. Miranda recently received honorable mention in the annual for her short story, “.”

  • The Arts Tax in Action: The HeART of 国产真实迷奸 is Still Beating

Students who took their first steps into PPS kindergarten classrooms in 2014 – the year 国产真实迷奸’s first-ever arts education tax went into effect – are now thriving sophomores.

Evan Sampson is one of those sophomores, and he will have a chance to share his story at this year’s HeART of 国产真实迷奸, a showcase spotlighting the artistic accomplishments of some PPS’s most talented students.

The two-week celebration of creativity will take place from April 16-28 at the 国产真实迷奸 Art Museum. All exhibits and performances are free and open to the public.

  • Lincoln & Grant Constitution Teams to Compete Nationally

This weekend, the Lincoln and Grant high school constitution teams will compete in the annual We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals in Washington, D.C.

Now in its fifth decade, the event brings together students from all 50 states for a series of mock congressional hearings on everything from the Constitutional Convention of 1787 to the separation of powers and the future of democracy.

The Lincoln and Grant constitution teams, under the instruction of Patrick Magee-Jenks and Angela DiPasquale respectively, have long histories of taking home trophies on both the state and national level.

    Good luck to all!
