Principal's Message

  • Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2023-24 school year! As a staff, we are excited for the upcoming school year and are eagerly looking forward to building memories and relationships, as well as developing the skills and knowledge to be critical thinkers and change agents in our community.

School doors will open at 8:37, and school will begin at 8:45, dismissing at 3:00 pm. Students in grades 1-2 will enter through the doors near the library.  Students in grades 3-5 will enter the doors near the gym.  Fifth grade students will go directly to the classroom on the first day of school.  Following that, they will drop off items in the classroom, and proceed to their 1st period specials class.

The school day begins with a community circle, and we are making it our goal to start the school day when the bell rings at 8:45.  Please try to arrive in time for students to get to class and put away belongings, so they are ready to join the community circle at 8:45.

Again this year, both 4th and 5th grades will be departmentalizing, with one teacher focusing on the math, science and health portions of the content and the other teacher focusing on reading, writing and social studies. This change allows teachers to strengthen their expertise by narrowing the content bands they are required to teach. It will also allow students diversity in their teachers and begin preparing them for middle school.

  • West Sylvan Eighth Grader Wields a Mighty Pen

Even as a small child, Miranda Yesser possessed a keen understanding of the mercenary nature of the publishing industry.

According to her one-page, tongue-in-cheek author bio, which hangs on a clothesline in English teacher Dr. Holly Graham’s colorful classroom, “Yesser began writing books at a young age, then trying to sell them to her family for 5 dollars a copy.”

It might be time to scoop those copies up. Miranda recently received honorable mention in the annual for her short story, “.”

  • The Arts Tax in Action: The HeART of 国产真实迷奸 is Still Beating

Students who took their first steps into PPS kindergarten classrooms in 2014 – the year 国产真实迷奸’s first-ever arts education tax went into effect – are now thriving sophomores.

Evan Sampson is one of those sophomores, and he will have a chance to share his story at this year’s HeART of 国产真实迷奸, a showcase spotlighting the artistic accomplishments of some PPS’s most talented students.

  • Lincoln & Grant Constitution Teams to Compete Nationally

This weekend, the Lincoln and Grant high school constitution teams will compete in the annual We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals in Washington, D.C.

Now in its fifth decade, the event brings together students from all 50 states for a series of mock congressional hearings on everything from the Constitutional Convention of 1787 to the separation of powers and the future of democracy.

The Lincoln and Grant constitution teams, under the instruction of Patrick Magee-Jenks and Angela DiPasquale respectively, have long histories of taking home trophies on both the state and national level.

    Good luck to all!
