Dear Rosa Parks Community,
We hope you’re having an amazing summer and are as excited as we are for the 2023-24 school year!
Rosa Parks is a diverse and unique school community. We are excited to offer a new Head Start program currently enrolling students in our neighborhood and beyond. We have made bold moves toward educational excellence and we will continue on the path of high expectations for every student who attends Rosa Parks. Utilizing the PPS Instructional Framework is imperative in our commitment to providing grade-level standards-aligned curriculum that is grounded in data-driven, deeply engaging, and culturally affirming instruction, which is our highest priority. Additionally, our school partnerships have been key to helping accomplish this task. We believe in the collective voices of all stakeholders as we work toward a better future for all students here at Rosa Parks.
We look forward to seeing returning and new students in the building soon. We are also excited about our Parent Volunteers and Resource Room opening which will be accessible for all families throughout the year. This letter will share more important information that will help you prepare for the coming school year.
The first day of school starts, Tuesday, August 29th for 1st-5th grade students. Kindergarten students will start on Tuesday, September 5. Pre-K students will start on Monday, September 11th.
Kinder Ramp Up
Our last Kinder Connect session is Wednesday, August 30, from 2:45-3:45 p.m. If you are a new parent with a kindergarten student and you have not participated in this session, we encourage you to be there. Kindergarten families will have time to connect with their teachers prior to the first day of school. Half of the Kindergarten students will have a soft start on Thursday, August 31 and the other half will have a soft start on Friday, September 1st. Teachers will reach out with more information about expectations for the soft start.
The Rosa Parks staff will return on Wednesday, August 23rd. We are planning an amazing year focused on consistency and excitement as we prioritize building positive relationships, student attendance and engagement, and aligning best practices to our instructional framework for all students.

Rosa Parks Classroom Supply list
Tools for School will be provided: new backpacks filled with school supplies for each student. Backpacks will be given out during the first week of school.
There is an optional donation of $5.00 per family to your child's classroom, so teachers can order additional supplies as needed throughout the school year. That means you will not have to worry about replacing supplies at any time during the school year. School supplies will not go home but instead, stay in school to use as needed.

Back to School Paperwork
Please return the completed forms to the school as soon as possible. It is essential to make sure we have the most current and up-to-date information.
Students Feeling Sick
A parent/guardian should screen their student every day and keep the student home if they notice symptoms of illness, including a new cough, unexplained shortness of breath, a fever, chills, new loss of taste or smell, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.
Please call the school to let us know when your student is sick, was in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, or was tested for COVID-19 themself.

Students should not be at school before breakfast time. We do not have staff on duty until 7:45 a.m.

School Visitors and Volunteers
This year we are hopeful that we will be able to have higher levels of volunteering than last year, but we are waiting on guidance from ODE and PPS. If you wish to be a school volunteer, please fill out the volunteer information form and background check at and complete all the required trainings and forms. This will help the process when we can safely have volunteers back in the building.
All school visitors and volunteers must enter through the main entrance and sign in using the Raptor System. First-time visitors and volunteers will need to bring a scannable government-issued identification card. More information is available on the Visitor/Volunteer Procedures webpage.
If you do want to visit the school, you will need to make an appointment and check in at the front office. While on-premises, you will need to wear a visitor identification badge at all times. You will be stopped by staff if you are not wearing a visitor badge.
*Pets are not allowed in the building at any time.
Student Building Access Before and After School
Students eating breakfast should arrive at the cafeteria entrance at 7:45 a.m.
Students who are not eating breakfast, class time starts promptly at 7:53 a.m.
Please have your student line up with their classroom under the blacktop.
Students should not arrive at school earlier than 7:45 a.m. as there is no student supervision at that time.
Before & After School Line up
We will continue our current structure by having students line up with their classrooms before and after school in a designated area in the back of the school building.
Pedestrian Crosswalks
Students and families are expected to cross at the crosswalks. Safety Patrol monitors the crosswalks at N. McCoy Ct. and N. Trenton St. between 7:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. and again from 2:10 p.m. to 2:25 p.m.
Kindergarten Student Pick Up
Parents must pick their students up in the back of school by the appropriate classroom. Please make sure that all information is up to date on the K-2 After School Release Form and on the registration form. For student safety, we will not release students if we do not have the person’s name who is picking up your student on the K-2 After School Release Form.
Parents' Early Student Pickup and Dismissal Messages
Please use the intercom to let the office staff know you are picking up a student and we will alert the teacher to have your student come down to meet you at the front entrance.
If you need to pick up your student early, please call the office as soon as possible. Please make sure to call the office before 2:00 p.m. unless in an emergency for any after-school dismissal, students to ensure we have adequate time to get the message to your student before the dismissal bell.
Car Pick Up
For student safety, car pick up and drop off we ask that you park your car and turn off the engine. Please do not drop and pick up students in the middle of the street. Please also observe the no parking signs and driveways.
Roundabout Use
When picking up your child in the roundabout, please remain in your vehicle and circle around the parking lot to wait for your students, then immediately exit the roundabout. If you want to conference with your student’s teacher, please park in the parking lot or on the street.
SUN(Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) After-School Program
Rosa Parks is proud to be partnering with SEI SUN Schools. SUN’s primary activities are considered to be extended-day academic and enrichment programs that are linked with the school day. Some examples of these after-school classes include homework help, mentoring, STEAM, recreational sports, and fitness. Families are also brought together for fun family evening events throughout the school year. Student Cell Phone Use
The policy for cell phone use is: that cell phones and devices must be off and put away the entire school day.
This means no cell phones should be out in the hallways, classrooms, lunch, recess, or bathrooms at Rosa Parks. If a student violates the policy the following steps will be taken:
1st violation - The phone will be confiscated and turned into the office to be picked up at the end of the day by the student.
2nd violation - The phone will be confiscated and parents will have to pick up the phone in the office.
3rd violation- We will request that the student and parent make alternative arrangements for phone use.
If your student needs to reach you, they need to come to the office to make the call, so the office is aware of any emergency or concern. Please do not engage in phone or text conversations with your child during the school day. If it is an emergency and you need to speak to your child please contact the main office at 503-916-6250.
Field Trips and Assemblies
This year we will continue conducting in-person field trips and assemblies. Please be on the lookout for permission slips and other important information. ** If you would like to volunteer or chaperone on field trips, please make sure you complete a background check 2 weeks in advance to accompany your child or volunteer on the field trip. Parents/family members without a background check will not be allowed to participate in the field trip.
Site Council Meetings (Every 4th Thursday of the month)
The Site Council is a group of administrators, teachers, and parents that meet monthly and identify ways to support the school community. By providing leadership direction and support, we define school priorities and implement ways to improve them. Site Council is about tailoring the specific needs of our students and our community. Tentatively we are looking to meet every 4th Thursday of the month from 2:30-3:30 p.m. All meetings will be held in person.
