As we head into a new month and evolving seasons, I find myself reflective of what has been accomplished by our team already this year and focused on the momentum that is building as we learn about and connect with our students over time.

This past month I have personally learned a lot, and know there is much more to learn. From my earliest conversations to today, I am hearing many shared goals and hopes for how school will support each of our students in being affirmed, confident, prepared, and finding joy in learning. A clear sentiment has also emerged about feeling the loss of celebration and tradition after multiple years navigating important safety measures and pauses on how we come together.

As a school, we are committed and energized by the ability to rebuild and re-imagine our school experiences and opportunities that bring us together, in community. We are actively working to design school specific events as a staff and through partnership with other organizations, such as the BCU. Our actions will be guided by the commitment to inclusivity and being mindful of how our decisions contribute to a sense of belonging and learning.

I am hopeful and confident that what we will create will expand and honor the spirit of our shared goals for each of our students. No matter the day of the year, this is what we are always seeking to accomplish.

We look forward to sharing more and appreciating the contributions of ideas for what brings us together!

  • Friends of Beach Gardens: Save the Date Sunday 11/6 & Other News

    Hello Friends of Beach Gardens,

    Next work party
    Sunday 11/6, tentatively 8am - noon
Let's hope for rain by then to soften the grounds for easier weeding. And maybe even some planting!

    Gardening with students
Rhiannon Leonard is our Beach Garden Coordinator, bringing gardening education and experiences into the classroom and teaching the SUN gardening program. If you've been paying attention, she's hugely transformed the vegetable garden in the last six weeks. If not ;) a photo of the dense jungle it was in August is attached as reminder. More updates here:
Rhiannon continues to do prep work in the gardens Wednesdays 1pm-3pm. Pop by any week to join in. Because this is during school hours, you will need to have completed the PPS Volunteer Background Check and should check in with the office before heading to the gardens.

    Project wishlist
I'm inviting you to contribute to this . What do you see as short- and long-term projects to have in mind? What perspective can you offer any projects listed already?
As a parent, neighbor, teacher, etc, what do you see as the biggest priorities? What would best support students and staff? Would you like to lead any of these efforts?
Surely many of these projects will be more than we can take on entirely as a scrappy group of volunteers, but we can use this list to come together on priorities and see what resources we can drum up over time to make our vision(s) happen.

Adopt a bed, adopt a tree
Would you have interest in adopting a small area of the garden/grounds, that is, checking in on maintenance on a semi-regular basis? For example, watering new plantings in front of the Beach sign while we wait for rain, pruning suckers from trees, keeping tabs on the tree-of-heaven menace that keeps popping its head up around the blacktop, and more. If so, send me a note and your area of interest!

    Add'l shout outs
Thank you to Jude Hawley for the donations of the plants in front of the Beach sign and her continuing care of them (where's the rain!?!).
And thank you to Autumn Davidson for lending tree watering bags to some drought-suffering young trees!

    Best,
    Ali Lucas

  • West Sylvan Eighth Grader Wields a Mighty Pen

Even as a small child, Miranda Yesser possessed a keen understanding of the mercenary nature of the publishing industry.

According to her one-page, tongue-in-cheek author bio, which hangs on a clothesline in English teacher Dr. Holly Graham’s colorful classroom, “Yesser began writing books at a young age, then trying to sell them to her family for 5 dollars a copy.”

It might be time to scoop those copies up. Miranda recently received honorable mention in the annual for her short story, “.”

  • The Arts Tax in Action: The HeART of 国产真实迷奸 is Still Beating

Students who took their first steps into PPS kindergarten classrooms in 2014 – the year 国产真实迷奸’s first-ever arts education tax went into effect – are now thriving sophomores.

Evan Sampson is one of those sophomores, and he will have a chance to share his story at this year’s HeART of 国产真实迷奸, a showcase spotlighting the artistic accomplishments of some PPS’s most talented students.

The two-week celebration of creativity will take place from April 16-28 at the 国产真实迷奸 Art Museum. All exhibits and performances are free and open to the public.

  • Lincoln & Grant Constitution Teams to Compete Nationally

This weekend, the Lincoln and Grant high school constitution teams will compete in the annual We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals in Washington, D.C.

Now in its fifth decade, the event brings together students from all 50 states for a series of mock congressional hearings on everything from the Constitutional Convention of 1787 to the separation of powers and the future of democracy.

The Lincoln and Grant constitution teams, under the instruction of Patrick Magee-Jenks and Angela DiPasquale respectively, have long histories of taking home trophies on both the state and national level.

    Good luck to all!
