  • How You Can Help

    Here is a list of volunteer opportunities at Cesar Chavez School. Please read through them to see if any might interest you. You do not have to be a PTSA member to volunteer.

    1. HELPING HANDS: This group meets on Fridays from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and from 1 pm to 4:30 pm (as needed). We hope to have enough volunteers to alternate weeks. Tasks include making copies, assembling homework packets, laminating, preparing projects to be done in class, and anything else the staff might need.

    2. "SUPER" VOLUNTEER: Super Volunteers work on call as needed. They will fill in wherever needed if another volunteer can't make their assignment or if not enough volunteers can be found for a particular activity.

    3. CLASSROOM VOLUNTEER: Help in the classroom at your convenience in an area of interest to you, such as reading, art, math, or science.

    4. FIELD TRIP CHAPERONE: Accompany classes on field trips throughout the year. We often are short of parents, so you might be asked to help a different grade level than your child's. Usually involves an all day trip.

    5. SPORTS OR DRILL TEAM: Volunteers are needed as coaches and assistant coaches for sports teams and for the drill team. Each team should also have a team parent to organize schedules and distribute information to team members. Time commitment is fairly extensive to cover practices and games or parades.

    6. LIBRARY AIDES: Assist in the running of the library. Tasks include upgrading for the Dynix system, cataloging and shelving books, repairing torn books, updating displays, and other general library work. Time commitment and hours vary.

    7. FUNDRAISING VOLUNTEERS: Assist PTSA with various fundraising activities such as distributing and collecting fundraising packets, sorting merchandise, and distributing it to students. Time commitment varies but should only be a few hours at fundraiser times.

    8. PTSA CLOTHING CENTER VOLUNTEERS: The PTSA Clothing Center collects and distributes clothing to needy students and families. Volunteers help organize clothing and assist students and families visiting the center. Volunteers work shifts between 9am-2pm on Portsmouth's two assigned clothing center days.

    9. BOOK FAIR ORGANIZER: Plan and organize fall and spring book fairs. Organize volunteers, set up and take down displays, and keep track of daily sales and turn money over to PTSA Treasurer.

    10. BOOK FAIR VOLUNTEERS: Work a two hour shift at the fall or spring book fair and help students choose and buy books, or help with the set up and take down of displays.

    11. PICTURE DAY VOLUNTEERS: Help the photographer prep students for pictures.

    12. SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHER: The perfect job for anyone interested in photography. Must be able to attend most school events, days included. Film, if needed, will be provided by the PTSA.

    13. FAMILY ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE: Work with the parent outreach coordinator to plan family oriented activities. This committee will meet to plan various family activities throughout the year. Activities may include Craft Night, Literacy Night, Math or Science Night, OMSI Night, Blazers or Winterhawks Nights, 国产真实迷奸 Beavers Baseball Night, Zoo Day, family hikes, family night at the pool or roller skating rink, picnics, or any other things the committee comes up with THESE ARE NOT FUNDRAISING EVENTS, but ways to help bring families together. Meeting times and locations will be decided by the committee.

    14. FAMILY NIGHT VOLUNTEERS: Help out at family night activities by serving refreshments, helping with crafts, and helping provide security. Usually involves tow to three hours on the family night.

    15. OPEN HOUSE COORDINATOR: Work with the staff to plan whatever assistance they might need from the PTSA.

    16. OPEN HOUSE VOLUNTEERS: Help set up and serve food, assist with decorations, if necessary, man the PTSA Volunteer tables, provide security presence, and help with clean up.

    17. GRANDPARENT'S DAY VOLUNTEERS: Serve refreshments, make and distribute name tags and school maps, direct people to classrooms, and clean up after the event.
