(Updated March 28, 2024)
What is Summer Acceleration Academy?- Summer Acceleration Academy is a supplemental academic summer program for current Kindergarten through Fifth grade students. The program is focused on providing support for unfinished learning for students and has three big goals:
- Foster joyful learning
- Support unfinished skill development
- Create an on-ramp to the next grade and the fall
- The curriculum includes:
- Targeted literacy instruction, including foundational skills for reading, comprehension strategies, and fluency work;
- Math instruction focused on skill building and mathematical mindset development; and
- Hands-on project-based STEAM learning.
- Class sizes are projected to be about 15 students.
- Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all participating students.
- Transportation will be provided in the morning and after lunch.
- Transportation routes will be communicated mid-June at www.pps.net/bus. The transportation office can be reached at 503-916-6901.
- The program is offered at no cost to families.
Who attends Summer Acceleration Academy?
- Summer Acceleration Academy invitations are based on winter literacy assessment data. Using this data helps us identify students who may need additional support to reach grade-level expectations in reading. Additional students may also be invited based on Spring assessments, depending on capacity.
- The students in current grades K-5 who will be invited to participate in Summer Acceleration Academy are:
- Students who fall below grade level in reading, based on Winter 2024 literacy assessments (MAP/MAP Fluency);
- Students who receive English Language Development services and are new to the country, or whose most recent English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA) score demonstrates a need for reading support; and
- The siblings of the students who meet the above criteria.
- School teams will be reviewing lists of eligible students and reaching out to families starting in mid-March. If you believe that your student meets the criteria listed above, and you haven't heard about enrollment by early April, please reach out to your student's teacher.
- Accommodations will be made for students who experience disabilities.
When is Summer Acceleration Academy?
- The program will run Monday through Friday from July 1 - August 1, 2024 from 7:45am - 1:00pm.
- Families will have the opportunity to opt into afternoon enrichment programming at no cost.
Where will the program be offered?
- We are using a HUB Site Model again this summer, clustering nearby schools together for programming.
- HUB Sites and school feeder patterns are available at this link: Summer Acceleration Academy HUB Sites.
Why Summer Acceleration Academy?
- Our supplemental Summer Acceleration program is an excellent way for students to address unfinished learning by gaining proficiency in key grade-level skills, giving students a strong start to the next school year.
- Invitations for Summer Acceleration Academy are based on mid-year assessments identifying students who need support reaching grade level standards during this summer program.
How do I enroll?
- The enrollment process for SAA 2024 will begin with the first round of invitations sent directly to the families of prioritized eligible students on March 18, 2024.
- The second round of invitations will be extended to families of eligible students beginning on April 8, 2024.
- Enrollment will close as capacity is reached at each hub site and grade level.
What's next if you're already enrolled?
- If you have already enrolled in the program, your student's teacher will be reaching out to introduce themselves during the week of June 24 - 28, 2024.
