Join Growing Gardens and the Kelly Elementary School PTA for a fun morning of spring gardening on Saturday, April 13th, 10:00-11:30 AM! We will be making an herb spiral to grow more herbs in the garden and giving love to our sorrel (sour leaf) bed.

HeART of 国产真实迷奸 Celebration:

We are excited to have several students whose artwork or musical talents will be showcased at the HeART of 国产真实迷奸 Showcase on Tuesday, April 16 at the 国产真实迷奸 Art Museum. The event is free and open to the public. 

2024-25 Staffing and Budget Update:

As a district we are facing limited revenue, declining enrollment and rising expenses, which leads to a $170 million gap over the next 3 years. The district is able to mitigate some of this gap through using the district’s reserve monies. After that, there is still a $110 million gap spread over 3 years. What does this mean for Kelly Elementary? For the most part, we were able to retain our current staffing with what was provided by the district in addition to Equity FTE and Title I dollars. We will continue to have 18 classroom teachers (2 for English Scholars at each grade level and 1 for Russian Immersion at each grade level). Based on our current enrollment and projected enrollment, class sizes will continue to remain within the district thresholds for each grade level. Where we saw the most impact was to our Arts Funding - we decreased from 1.5 FTE for music and art to 1.2 FTE, which will be split to 0.6 for music and 0.6 for art. We are also part of two different grants through the district that will provide our students and community with a full-time social worker and full-time comprehensive school psychologist. You may have also heard that most elementary school assistant principals were eliminated from school staffing. Based on the needs of our community and in consultation with district leadership, I made the decision to use equity FTE to keep an assistant principal at Kelly. 

Kelly’s Got Talent:

We would like to have a talent show for our students to showcase their various talents. We are planning to have students submit their talent via a recording on a Google Form but we need help putting all of the videos together into one movie to share with families. If you have skills with creating videos and would like to support this project, please reach out to Ms. Fish.

Important Information:

• We would like to offer affinity groups for families. Affinity groups are organized based on how a person identifies. Some ideas for affinity groups for our families could be a Slavic Family Affinity Group, Black Family Affinity Group, Latino Family Affinity Group, Asian Family Affinity Group, Pacific Islander Family Affinity Group, and LGBTQ+ Family Affinity Group. If you are interested in organizing and facilitating an affinity group for our families, please reach out to Ms. Fish, sfish@pps.net

School Climate

At Kelly Elementary, we show C.A.R.E. towards one another and our community. Please ask your child what the acronym stands for and what that means to them. You can also specifically ask them what C.A.R.E. looks like in the cafeteria or during recess.

Attendance

We are working this year to improve our attendance and tardy rates. It is important that students are here on time and can have a calm start to their instructional day. We’ve also noticed that many of our students arriving late are at Kelly as part of an out-of-district transfer. Please remember that students must meet certain attendance and behavior expectations to remain at Kelly on an out-of-district transfer.

Caring School Community

We use Caring School Community as our Social Emotional Learning curriculum, which “promotes positive behavior through direct teaching of responsibility, empathy, and cooperation, creating settings where students feel heard, known, and cared for. Students become intrinsically motivated to contribute productively to a community they feel invested in, and where they know they matter.” We will start buddy classes after the New Year.

Arrival

Our new arrival procedures are working well and helping to get students to class ready to learn on time! All students enter through our main doors beginning at 8:30am. Students in grades 3-5 should enter through the far left door while students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade should enter through the far right door. They then follow a similar pattern with the cafeteria doors and this helps with the traffic pattern so students can quickly get their breakfast and get seated. 

Families, please say “goodbye” to your child at the front doors! 

The first bell will ring at 8:37. If your student arrives after 8:37 and does not want breakfast, they may go directly to class. The late bell rings at 8:45! If your child arrives after 8:45, please walk them into the office to sign in. 

Dismissal

Dismissal is at 3pm. Kindergarten through 2nd grade students are dismissed under the covered area. Third through fifth grade students dismiss out of the parking lot doors. The older students often meet up with families and siblings at a designated location. After 3:07 pm, any remaining student is brought to the front of the school outside of the main entrance. The office closes at 3:30pm so all students MUST be picked up no later than 3:30. If you have an emergency and are going to be late, please call our office to notify them.

BottleDrop

We will participate in the Earth Day Give fundraiser with Bottle Drop. These funds will be used for our End of the Year Picnic. Blue bags were sent home with all students. PTA has to pay for these bags so if you are not planning to participate in this fundraiser, please return the bag to the front office. We will have collections on Friday, April 26 and Friday, May 3. Thanks for saving your cans for Kelly!

Volunteer Opportunities!!!!!!!

Volunteers must sign up with Raptor, so if you haven’t, please do so with this link: /volunteer

You will need to do this to chaperone for field trips or any volunteering in the school.  It may take a few weeks to get approved so it is a good idea to start the process ASAP.  Once approved, your background check will stay active for 3 years.

Latino Network

SUN Afterschool Program

Enrollment for the spring session has been finalized and student confirmation letters with dates/class placements came home with students today. Spring SUN begins on Monday, April 8th and goes until May 30th. After school classes are held Monday-Thursday. You will need to refer to the confirmation letter to see which dates your child is enrolled. Please report absences to SUN staff by 2:30pm each day.  Dismissal is at 5:30pm. Please come to the main entrance to sign out your student. Due to an overwhelming amount of applications for spring enrollment, we were unable to meet all families requests. If you did not receive a confirmation letter or email, your student has been placed on our waitlist. If your student is on the waitlist for a class, we will contact you if a space opens up.    If you have any questions, please contact Cristina or Tammy at  (503)780-9813.

Play and Learn Groups:

Spring Play & Learn sessions begin April 9th and continue through May 30th. This is a free play-based community group for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers. Groups will be held at 10am at the Kelly Head Start Center on Tuesdays and at Montavilla Community Center on Thursdays. Family Resources:

We are happy to announce that Kelly has a new Family Resource Manager working with the SUN team. Antares Argueta will be at Kelly Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays to assist families looking for assistance with food, utilities, rent or other support.  You can also email Antares at ArguetaA@latnet.org for assistance inquiries.   

Food Pantry 

Our food pantry is open on Wednesdays, 12-1:30pm. Please do not line up until 12pm.

Champions Before and After School Care

Champions before- and after-school programs offer learning activities, homework help, healthy snacks, and a whole lot of fun – all within the safety and convenience of your child’s school. We’ve been meeting the needs of busy families by providing a fun and safe space where children can foster their love of learning and develop the skills necessary to succeed in school and life since the 1990’s.

Champions starts as early as 6:30 am and runs as late as 6 pm. We offer flexible scheduling and foster the love of learning by creating engaging experiences for children to unlock their own potential. Plus, we can direct you to subsidy programs in the area that will cover most, if not all, of your tuition. Curious about Champions?
